Final Grade Calculator: What Do I Need on My Final?
Enter your current grade, the grade you want, and how much your final is worth — get the exact score you need.
Calculate the score you need
From your syllabus grading table.
How it works: the formula and method
Needed = (Target − Current × (1 − w)) ÷ w, where w is the final exam's weight as a decimal. Your current grade only counts for the share of the course already graded, so a heavily weighted final can move your grade a long way in either direction — which is exactly why this calculation matters before you start revising.
How to use this calculator
- Find your current grade in your course portal or gradebook.
- Check your syllabus for the final exam's weight (for example 25%).
- Choose the overall grade you are aiming for.
- Enter the three numbers above. The calculator tells you the exact final score you need — or warns you if that target is already secured or out of reach.
Worked examples
Example 1 — a reachable target
Maria has 88% going into the final, wants 90% overall, and her final is worth 40%. Needed = (90 − 88 × 0.6) ÷ 0.4 = (90 − 52.8) ÷ 0.4 = 93%. A strong but realistic target.
Example 2 — an impossible target
Jamal has 72%, wants 90%, and his final is worth 20%. Needed = (90 − 72 × 0.8) ÷ 0.2 = 162%. No score can do that — his ceiling is 72 × 0.8 + 100 × 0.2 = 77.6%, so the smart move is to secure the best grade still available.
Frequently asked questions
How is the score I need calculated?
Needed = (Target − Current × (1 − w)) ÷ w, where w is the final exam weight as a decimal. Your current grade only counts for the share of the course that is already graded.
What if I need more than 100%?
Then that target grade is mathematically out of reach in this course. The calculator says so plainly and suggests realistic next steps: check for extra credit, ask about grade replacement, and aim for the highest grade that is still achievable.
What if my grade is already secured?
If the score you need is 0% or below, you keep your target grade even with a zero on the final. The calculator flags this so you can plan your revision time elsewhere.
My course uses points, not percentages. Can I still use this?
Yes — switch to points mode and enter the points you have earned, the points possible so far, the final exam points and the total course points. The tool converts them to a weight automatically.
