Weighted Grade Calculator: Categories & Semester
Categories with weights, raw points, or a Q1/Q2/final semester split — three modes, one accurate weighted grade.
Calculate your weighted grade
Scores: comma-separated percentages, e.g. 90, 85, 100. Drop-lowest: how many lowest scores your syllabus drops in that category.
How it works: the formula and method
Weighted grade = Σ(score × weight) ÷ Σweights. When the weights of work graded so far add up to less than 100, the grade-so-far divides by the completed weight only (renormalising), and a projection shows where you would land if the remaining work were perfect. Points mode skips weights entirely: your grade is simply total points earned ÷ total points possible.
How to use this calculator
- Choose a mode: Categories (homework, quizzes, exams with weights), Points (earned out of possible), or Semester (Q1, Q2 and final on a preset split).
- In Categories mode, add each category's scores, its weight, and any drop-lowest rule from your syllabus.
- Calculate to see your grade so far, the total weight graded, and your projection.
Worked examples
Example 1 — categories
Homework (weight 40) averaging 100, exams (weight 60) averaging 80 so far: grade = (100 × 40 + 80 × 60) ÷ 100 = 88.
Example 2 — semester 40/40/20
Q1 = 80, Q2 = 90, final = 100 on a 40/40/20 split: 80 × 0.4 + 90 × 0.4 + 100 × 0.2 = 88. Without the final yet, the grade so far renormalises to (32 + 36) ÷ 0.8 = 85.
Frequently asked questions
How is a weighted grade calculated?
Multiply each score by its category weight, add the results, and divide by the total weight. If your weights add up to less than 100 because some work is not graded yet, the grade-so-far divides only by the weight completed so far.
What does grade-so-far mean when weights don't add to 100?
It is your average over the work already graded, renormalised to 100%. The calculator shows both that figure and your projected grade if the remaining work were perfect, so you can see your floor and ceiling.
How does drop-lowest work?
Some courses drop your lowest quiz or assignment in a category. Enter how many to drop and the category average is worked out from the remaining scores.
How are semester grades calculated with 40/40/20?
Quarter 1 counts 40%, Quarter 2 counts 40% and the final exam 20%. A student with 80 in Q1, 90 in Q2 and 100 on the final finishes on 88. Use semester mode and pick your school's split.
